No tradition defines Northern Illinois University Greek Life better than Tugs. With roots dating back more than half a century, NIU Tugs is widely regarded as one of the most unique collegiate traditions in the country. Unlike a traditional tug-of-war, teams compete from trenches in a physically demanding contest that combines strength, strategy, endurance, and brotherhood. What began as a campus competition generations ago has evolved into the signature event of NIU Greek Life and a cherished tradition for students and alumni alike.

Since capturing the chapter’s first championship in 2019, Sigma Nu has claimed five Men’s Tugs Championships (2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2026) and became only the second fraternity in NIU history to win four consecutive championships. Beyond its own competitive success, Sigma Nu has helped shape the broader Tugs community by coaching six Women’s Tugs Championship teams since 2018 across Alpha Phi, Tri Sigma, and Alpha Sigma Alpha. Through an unwavering commitment to preparation, discipline, and teamwork, Sigma Nu has become the standard-bearer of Tugs in the current era, carrying forward one of NIU’s most storied traditions while setting a benchmark for future generations of competitors.
2019 SIGMA NU IFC TUGS CHAMPIONS
Sigma Nu Makes History in 2019
Sigma Nu achieved a milestone that had eluded the chapter for decades, capturing its first-ever IFC Men’s Tugs Championship in 2019. After splitting the first two ropes with Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Nu secured the title in a decisive third rope to complete a remarkable underdog run. Fueled by months of preparation, relentless determination, and a belief in one another, the victory marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Sigma Nu Tugs.
2022 SIGMA NU IFC TUGS CHAMPIONS
A Championship Return
After the return of IFC Men’s Tugs after Covid, Sigma Nu captured the 2022 championship with a decisive victory over Phi Sigma Kappa. Following a tightly contested opening rope, Sigma Nu seized control in the second round to secure the title before a packed crowd of students, alumni, and supporters. The championship marked the beginning of a remarkable run for the chapter, showcasing the teamwork, determination, and preparation that would come to define Sigma Nu’s modern era of Tugs success.
2023 SIGMA NU IFC TUGS CHAMPIONS
Defending the Crown with Back to Back championships
Sigma Nu captured the 2023 IFC Men’s Tugs Championship with a decisive 2-0 victory over Phi Sigma Kappa, securing back-to-back titles. After winning a tightly contested opening rope, Sigma Nu seized control in the second and never looked back. Fueled by resilience, teamwork, and the dedication of both veteran leaders and emerging talent, the chapter continued its rise as one of the premier programs in modern NIU Tugs history.
2024 SIGMA NU IFC TUGS CHAMPIONS
Sigma Nu Captures 4th Straight IFC Tugs Championship
Sigma Nu cemented its place in NIU Tugs history by defeating Phi Sigma Kappa to win the 2024 IFC Men’s Tugs Championship. The victory made Sigma Nu just the second fraternity ever to capture four consecutive titles. In a hard-fought three-rope battle, Sigma Nu relied on patience, discipline, and determination to prevail, pulling away late in the opening rounds before securing the championship in Rope 3 and extending its growing legacy of excellence.
2026 SIGMA NU IFC TUGS CHAMPIONS
Redemption and a Return to the Top
Sigma Nu reclaimed the IFC Men’s Tugs Championship in 2026 with a hard-fought victory over Delta Chi in a rematch of the previous year’s semifinal. After controlling the opening rope and dropping the second by advantage, Sigma Nu prevailed in an intense third rope that lasted nearly 45 minutes. Fueled by months of preparation and a determination to avenge last year’s defeat, Sigma Nu secured its fifth championship in six years and further strengthened its place among the elite programs in NIU Tugs history.
